Oak and Iron (Theo Shields)

  • New Glasgow Society 1307 Argyle Street Glasgow G3 8TL

Dramatic sculptural works made from the encounter between molten iron and fire-hollowed wood.

Sculptor Theo Shields has collaborated with Fraser Waugh from Edinburgh Cast-Metals and carpenter Chris Scotland to produce a series of sculptures in native hardwoods and recycled metal. Oak and Iron is a study on the impact of molten metal on the form and integrity of wood. The completed sculptures are made from casts taken from the inner cavity of fire-hollowed logs; as hot iron is poured into a slab of oak, the iron and wood reject each other, burning and bending until fusing as one. The end product is ultimately a conversation between these two raw materials.

The exhibition runs at New Glasgow Society from 11-13th September, noon to 5pm, with a preview on the evening of the 10th September, 7 to 9pm.
