Genevieve Ryan is a freelance illustrator, designer and printmaker based in Edinburgh. Following her graduation in 2009 from Edinburgh College of Art, she has worked for a variety of design agencies around the World and has amassed notable clients such as Idecologie, Disaronno, Disney Australia, Rome Snowboards and Ekawear, to name a few! We attended Genevieve's current solo exhibition Float at Veneer Gallery and were overwhelmed by the response our Instagram post had. As a result, we decided to explore her work and find out more.
"After graduating in 2009 from ECA, I began a 6 month residency at Owl and Lion in Edinburgh. It is a really unique shop which has a working studio attached to it. All the items for sale are made on site. From bookbinding to hand printing illustrations, you are part of the creative process from the initial ideal to the final product. The books and artworks are unlike any other items on the high street."
"Following the residency at Owl and Lion, I moved to Australia to work in fashion and advertising. Living by the beach and being part of the innovate creative industry in Sydney was brilliant, however home felt too far away. At the end of 2012, I came back to Scotland and began freelancing again."
As an illustrator, printmaker and designer, Genevieve's work has covered a variety of projects. Her entrepreneurial ventures have continued to grow too, as she explains, "I recently set up Ossenn; a small, bespoke creative agency specialising in branding and identity."
"My work is often described as light, airy, delicate and intricate, with 'pop' accent colours. I use a mechanical pencil to draw precise patterns, buildings, people and elements of my imagination. Colour is then added with sweeping brush strokes and detailed line work. Sometimes drawings and marks are brought together digitally then made into limited edition prints. I also love screen printing and have been a member of Edinburgh Printmakers for a number of years."
In addition to her current exhibition, Float, Genevieve is also working on a number of commercial branding projects and private commissions. On the future she states, "My next exhibition will be around Christmas time at a new community arts venue in Edinburgh, launching very soon."
